Entrance Assessment  (Duration : 60 mins)

Top

The most effective introduction to Stott Pilates is through an entrance assessment. An entrance assessment is a private training session. A trainer begins by doing a postural analysis. This analysis will take 10-15 minutes and permits the trainer to create a postural profile that will allow all future workouts at North West Pilates to be tailored to your particular postural characteristics. Your trainer will take you through a Stott Pilates workout that focuses on the basic principles and essential-level exercises. If you are new to Pilates–based exercise, the pace of this session may seem slow since we are just beginning to make you aware of deep core muscles. If you’ve had prior experience with Pilates exercise, your trainer will set a pace that matches your level of ability. Following the workout, you and your trainer will discuss your training options. From private sessions to group classes-from beginner to advanced-level training, your trainer will work with you to create a regime with your health and fitness goals in mind. Entrance assessments can be booked anytime by calling the studio on 01744 751115.

Pilates for Back Care

Back Problem Testimonial
Having suffered for many years with back problems and having visited Doctors, Hospitals and Physiotherapists it was suggested by a Physiotherapist that Pilates might help with my problem. My problem being a debilitating severe muscle spasm, which occurs when the back muscles support the lower vertebrae, which do not separate as normal. Whilst Pilates doesn't cure the problem it has lengthened my spine, improved my posture and strengthened my back muscle so that the spasm hardly ever occurs, but more importantly the lessons and exercises learned on realigning and lengthening the back enables me to confidently react to a spasm with exercise, rather than rest and reduce recovery time from what was often weeks to a matter of days.
Colin Leahy Managing Director Carlton Freight

The important principles of Pilates are consistent with an exercise program that promotes back health. In particular, learning awareness of neutral alignment of the spine and strengthening the deep postural muscles that support this alignment are important skills for back pain patients.

Patients with pain stemming from excessive movement and degeneration of the intervertebral discs and joints are particularly likely to benefit from a Pilates exercise program. In addition, postural asymmetries can be improved, thus decreasing wear and tear resulting from uneven stresses on the intervertebral joints and discs.

Pilates improves strength, flexibility and suppleness of the muscles of the hip and shoulder girdle. Fluid and supported movement through these joints helps prevent unnecessary torque on the vertebral column.

As a general rule, back patients should avoid exercises that push the spine into extremes of flexion or extension, or combine flexion with side bending or twisting the spine. These motions place excessive stress on the intervertebral discs. Also, it is important to avoid fatigue-either mental or physical-which is when proper form is lost and injuries more likely to occur.

Back Pain in the Workplace
The Causes

  • Poor workstation ergonomics
  • Lifting heavy goods or equipment
  • Repetitive tasks - manual packing of goods
  • Manual handling in awkward places - delivery work
  • Heavy manual labour
  • Operating heavy equipment
  • Long distance driving
  • Stress related tension - high job demands and lack of control

Back pain can arise in many work situations. The exact cause is often unclear. Non-diagnosed back pain with no treatment can lead to an on going and sometimes worsening condition. As with many ill health conditions, some people are more susceptible to back pain than others

Activities that Aggravate Back Pain and Affect Workplace Performance

  • Stooping, bending over or crouching
  • Lifting objects which are too heavy or bulky and carrying objects awkwardly
  • Pushing, pulling or dragging excessive loads
  • Working beyond normal abilities and limits, and when physically overtired
  • Using poor lifting techniques (or where you are unable to use lifting aids due to the working environment)
  • Stretching, twisting and reaching
  • Prolonged periods in one position, leading to postural strain
  • Situations where the whole body is subjected to vibration, jolting and jarring

Most of the activities stem from poor posture, and being unaware of how to protect you’re back using appropriate postural techniques.
